HI Alum to NHS Inductees: Character is 'Currency" in Real World | Schools
"The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're un-cool."
Eric Lauer, Holy Innocents' '01, used one of his favorite quotes Thursday (from the movie Almost Famous) to talk to 2012 National Honor Society inductees about good character, one of the four pillars of NHS.
"This is 'cultural cool' that's happening here," Lauer said of the high school environment, where a student may appear to be cool, but be hiding his or her real persona. "There are so many ways now to connect with people and share yourself today, but the new media offers few ways to genuinely connect with people—and be uncool."

Lauer, a 2005 University of Georgia graduate and General Sales Manager at Cox Media Group, encouraged NHS members to develop strong character because without it, he emphasized, "it's difficult to excel" at the other NHS cornerstones: scholarship, service and leadership.
"I've decided that there are many opportunities in life to reveal the not-so-great things about your character," said Lauer at Thursday's 10 a.m. ceremony in the Main Gym. "And I've also found that there are few opportunities in life to reveal your true character. So your challenge is to look for the ways to reveal your true character.
"It's not going to happen on your mobile device or your iPod, and when you do it, you'll know it. And I promise you, it will feel really cool."

Being tapped for membership in the National Honor Society is among the highest honors a high school student can receive. Membership is awarded only to those students who display outstanding academic accomplishment, service to community, recognized leadership among peers, and a character reflective of the highest standards of morality, honesty, and reliability.
This year, 26 Holy Innocents' students received the honor. Each was given a white NHS stole by a faculty member, who placed it over the student's shoulders. During graduation ceremonies, this stole is worn over the commencement robe.
Holy Innocents' students inducted into the National Honor Society for 2012 were: seniors Daniel Forrestal, Amy Janvier, Tay Rivers, Emily Stockert, and Anne Yanda; and juniors Creighton Aldridge, Payton Anderson, Devon Asbury, Andrew Ballantine, Hannah Bell, James Best, Margaret Crewdson, Tori Hovancik, Lindsey Klopfenstein, Kendall Jackson, Gilly Levy, Jordan McBride, Jada Murray, Brian Parrish, Cory Philipson, William Rasmussen, Katherine Serafen, Charles Spencer, Brantley Taylor, Emma van Beuningen and Tabatha Yelos.
